Priorities and funded actions

Objectives

  • To demonstrate and/or deploy viable technical solutions that contribute to repurposing formerly operating coal and lignite mines, those in the process of closure, and coal-related infrastructure
  • To support non-energetic uses and the production of raw materials (minerals and metals) from mining waste and residues from formerly operating coal mines or mines in the process of closure
  • To support the environmental restoration of formerly operating coal mines or mines in the process of closure and of affected adjacent areas and communities
  • To process methane emissions either by destroying/oxidising methane molecules or by recovering and using them as an energy source
  • To demonstrate and/or deploy environmentally sustainable and viable technical solutions that contribute to the monitoring, management and/or treatment of mine water and water tables in coal or lignite mines that are closed or are being closed down

 

Eligibility

  • Be legal entities (public or private bodies, e.g. undertakings, public bodies, research organizations, higher or secondary education establishments or other legal entities) which carry out an RTD activity or substantially contribute to such an activity
  • Be established in one of the eligible countries:
  • Beneficiaries and affiliated entities must register in the Participant Register before submitting the proposal
  • A consortium composed of minimum 2 independent applicants (beneficiaries; not affiliated entities) from 2 different eligible countries must be constituted.

Additional information

  • Initial duration of the action: between 36 and 54 months

Projects of longer duration may be accepted in duly justified cases. Extensions are possible, if duly justified and through an amendment.

Financement
  • Total budget of the call: 35 million euros
  • Amount of the grant: between 5.000.000 and 9.000.000 euros (exceptionally up to 18.000.000 euros) for large demonstrators)
  • Funding rate: 50% of the total eligible costs
