Priorities and funded actions

Objectives

  • To support the coal industry diversification through the application of new technologies
  • To focus on repurposing of industrial sites related to the coal industry, specifically the repurposing of closed coal mines or coal mines under closure and/or the reconversion of coal power plants.

Priorities

  • Priority 1: Mine water monitoring, management and/or treatment
  • Priority 2: Land monitoring, modelling, stabilisation and/or restoration
  • Priority 3: Waste and/or spoil treatment
  • Priority 4: energy recovery associated with the mitigation and monitoring of methane emissions from formerly operating coal mines, coal mines identified for eventual closure in Territorial Just Transition Plans or coking coal mines (e.g. ventilation air methane (VAM) or abandoned mine methane (AMM) projects that oxidise methane and produce useful energy) and/or geothermal energy systems
  • Priority 5: materials recycling and development of alternative materials, including recovery of critical raw materials
  • Priority 6: repurposing of former coal and lignite mines as well as coal-related infrastructure, including power supply services, with projects for energy storage, renewable energy, hydrogen or hybrid solutions that enable sector coupling

  • Actions that address at least one of the six objectives and/or priorities of the call
  • Promotional and training activities for workers affected by the reduction of coal use

  • This call for proposals is an open call for proposals
  • Initial duration of the action: between 36 and 54 months

Eligibility

  • Be legal entities
  • Be established in one of the eligible coutries
  • Be a consortium composed of minimum 2 independant applicants from 2 different eligible countries
Financement
  • Total budget of the topic “Big Tickets for Coal“: 38 million euro
  • Grant amount: between 5 and 18 million euro
  • Co-financing rate: 50% of total eligible costs
